July Wrap Up

Books read

39891631

I started off the month by reading Chimera by Tyler Ellis (review). It is a graphic novel about a group of thieves on a mission to find the chimera. I was a little confused with the story but I ended up enjoying the graphic novel either way. The art was beautiful and the characters and the story were quite interesting.

30259893

After that, I read Ragdoll by Daniel Cole (review). In this book, a corpse made of parts of six victims and the head belongs to Khalid, a serial killer whose case almost ruined Detective Wolf’s life. The story completely pulled me and it was really hard to put the book down. The characters were complex and well-developed. I absolutely loved it and recommend it to everyone who loves mystery thrillers. I really want to read the next book in the series but don’t know when I’ll get around to doing it.

30096041

Next, I read The Shadow Glass by Aly Fell (review). This is a graphic novel about Rosalind. When she sees the Shadow Glass in the house of her mentor, Dr. John Dee, she steals it. This is na obsidian mirror that actually existed which was believed to be able to communicate with spirits. This graphic novel was a let down. The story wasn’t that well-developed, there was weirdly placed romance that influenced the whole book, female characters (who weren’t related) looked too much alike, making it hard to distinguish them, and so on. You can read more of my thoughts when I finally post my review but. overall, it was very disappointing and I don’t really recommend it to anyone.

33147708

After that, I read Claimed by the Cyborg by Cara Bristol (review) which was the book club pick of the month. In this book, March travels to Xenia to look for his lost love. Turns out she’s the princess of that planet, who is about to marry someone she doesn’t love. This book was a typical romance novel but was also kind of fun to read. Neither the characters nor the plot were mind-blowing but I still had some fun reading it.

541094

Next, I read The Professor’s Daughter by Joann Sfar (review). In this graphic novel, the daughter of a famous Egyptologist falls in love with a mummy. This book was a complete surprise, it is short but so much fun to read! I laughed aloud several times and I recommend it to anyone who wants a fun light read.

30419639

Finally, I read Rising Action, which is the fourth volume of The Wicked + The Divine series by  Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson (review). After such a big hiatus from the series (after the disappointing last volume), it felt good to pick it up again. In case you don’t know, in this series, Gods appear on Earth each 90 years and live only 2. In those two years, they become loved or hated superstars, known around the world. This volume continued the story where the second one left off. Looking back to it, I felt that the plot wasn’t as strong as it could have been but it was still really nice to read. This series has a lot of characters so keep that in mind if you’re thinking of picking it up.

Blog posts

I started off the month by posting my review of Claimed by the Cyborg by Cara Bristol (REVIEW), since it was the book club pick of the month, as I’ve mentioned above. Thatonenerdygirl and I also wrote a book club discussion of the book over on her blog, feel free to check it out here. Just keep in mind that there are spoilers.

272279

After that, I posted by review of Body of Lies by Iris Johansen (REVIEW), which is the fourth book of the Eve Duncan series. In this book, Eve is hired to reconstruct the face of na unknown murder victim in Baton Rouge. I started this series some time ago and I’ve been enjoying it so far. The books are always full of action and the mystery is always intriguing. If you want to know more, you can always check the review I posted (linked above).

18775119

Next, I posted my review of the first volume of Monster by Naoki Urasawa (REVIEW). I only read this manga because Thatonenerdygirl insisted, and I’m so glad I did. It follows a surgeon named Tenma who saves the life of a young boy which initially seems to be a good decision but, as it turns out, might not be. I was not expecting to enjoy this manga so much. I was completely pulled into the story and got really disappointed when the book reached its end. Luckily, thatonenerdygirl already bought the second volume so I’m expecting to get around to reading it soon. Needless to say, I recommend the manga.

Finally, I posted my July Book Haul which ended up being a lot bigger than I intended because of all the book fairs and book sales happening in my area.

Books added to my TBR

In case you don’t know, this section is where I put the books that I added to my want to read shelf on Goodreads, not including the books I bought.

33966138

The first book I added to by TBR this month was I Am Behind You by John Ajvide Lindqvist. From what I can tell, this book is about four families living in a  strange place without a Sun. Then, they see something approaching that will change them. The summary I wrote doesn’t do it justice but the book sounds really interesting, so I decided to add it.

36510759

After that, I added The Freeze-Frame Revolution by Peter Watts. The book seems to be about na almost impossible revolution, which honestly sounds pretty interesting. It has a very good rating on Goodreads so I’m hoping I’ll be able to get to it soon.

37941736

Finally, I added The Million by Karl Schroeder. This book only comes out in the first of september but, from what I can tell, in the book, the Earth is ruled by the million and, one month each year, tem billion visitors come to the planet to party and pollute. The book is about na illegal child, a visitor passing for a million. The synopsis sounds interesting enough but what made me really interested in the book was that it was written by Karl Schroeder who wrote Virga, a sci-fi series that I really enjoyed. Still, I’ll probably wait for the release and see what people have to say about it before picking it up.

Let me know in the comments which books you read this month and which ones you’re planning to read next.

Ashes of Candesce (Virga #5) REVIEW

Ashes of Candesce by Karl Shroeder

Published March 12th 2013

Genre: Science Fiction

Pages: 384

Source: Bought it

A world of endless sky, with no land, no gravity: this is Virga. Beginning in the seminal science fiction novel Sun of Suns, the saga of this striking world has introduced us to the people of stubborn pride and resilience who have made Virga their home; but also, always lurking beyond the walls of the world, to the mysterious threat known only as Artificial Nature. In The Sunless Countries, history tutor Leal Hieronyma Maspeth became the first human in centuries to learn the true nature of this threat. Her reward was exile, but now, in Ashes of Candesce, Artificial Nature makes its final bid to destroy Virga, and it is up to Leal to unite the quarrelling clans of her world to fight the threat.
Karl Schroeder’s Ashes of Candesce brings together all the heroes of the Virga series, and draws the diverse threads of the previous storylines together into one climactic conflict. Blending steampunk styling with a far-future setting and meditations on the posthuman condition, Ashes of Candesce mixes high adventure and cutting-edge ideas in a fitting climax to one of science fiction’s most innovative series.

Ashes of Candesce is the last book in the Virga series. It continues the story of all the main characters of the other books: Leal, Venera, Chaison, Antaea and Hayden, and it introduces another character, Keir.

The book starts with Leal, continuing her story. I liked her so much more. She stopped being so boring for me and I ended up caring for her. Venera’s still one of my favorite characters. She’s strong and determined, I love her. Chaison didn’t appear much but there was a bit of character development that I enjoyed. Hayden was like Chaison, he didn’t appear much but still showed some depth. Antaea was present in a big part of the novel. At the end of Pirate Sun, I liked her but she wasn’t a big character for me. Now, she has a special place in my heart. There was a lot going on in her head and the reader follows her struggle. I was able to connect with her in this book, specially in the last pages. Keir was the new main character that was introduced. Because he was from outside Virga, it was interesting to read about the different technologies that they had. His story was unraveled slowly throughout the novel and I ended up really liking him. His struggle to adapt to life inside Virga was fun to read and he became one of my favorite characters.

Now, the plot. I felt like the plot was intricate and complex. There was a lot going on in different places with different characters involved. Sometimes, it was hard to keep up. Still, Ashes of Candesce was a perfect finale to this series ans I’m sad to be leaving this world and the characters that I love.

In an ocean of weightless air where sunlight has never been seen, only the running lights of the city of Pacquaea glitter in the dark. One woman, Leal Hieronyma Maspeth, lives and dreams of love among the gaslit streets and cafés. And somewhere in the abyss of wind and twisted cloud through which Pacquaea eternally falls, a great voice has begun speaking.
As its cold words reach from space to the city walls—and as outlying towns and travelers’ ships start to mysteriously disappear—only Leal has the courage to try to understand the message thundering from the distance. Even the city’s most famous and exotic visitor, the sun lighter and hero named Hayden Griffin, refuses to turn aside from his commission to build a new sun for a foreign nation. He will not become the hero that Leal knows the city needs; so it is up to her to listen, and ultimately reply, to the voice of the worldwasp—because an astonishing disaster threatens Virga.

The Sunless Countries is the fourth book of the Virga series.

In this book we follow the story of Leal Maspeth, an history tutor from Sere.
This book didn’t have as much action as the others but it was more dense. It focused on unraveling the history of Virga and the political repercussions of that. Leal is a great character, she’s curious and is always looking for the truth but that was it. Her personality didn’t stand out for me even though I felt that she was more relatable than the other characters.

The plot was good but I feel like the previous books were better.

Because Leal felt flat, I’m hesitant to read the last book. I really want to read it and finish this series but I think I’ll read it when I have less work to do.

Nonetheless, ir was an enjoyable book, I just hope the last one will be better.

Venera Fanning was last seen falling into nothingness at the end of Sun of Suns. Now, in Queen of Candesce, Venera finds herself plunging through the air among the artificial worlds of Virga, far from home and her husband, who may or may not be alive. Landing in the ancient nation of Spyre, Venera encounters new enemies and new friends (or at least convenient allies). She must quickly learn who she can trust, and who she can manipulate in order to survive.
Survival isn’t her only goal; with the powerful Key of Candesce in her hands, she can control the fate of the entire world of Virga, yet something even more pressing is driving her–the all consuming need for revenge.

This book started off with so much action that it kept me awake for hours on the day I started reading it.

This book focused on Venera’s story after falling from the Sun of Suns.

There were introduced a lot of new characters but Garth Diamandis, with his unique personality and corky ways. It started off being just a new character but as his backstory unravels my love for him grew.

The plot was beautifully designed and the writing was outstanding, it kept me reading for hours, always curious to discover what happened next.

The ending was perfect and I can’t wait to read the sequel.

I feel like I can’t compare Queen of Candesce with Sun of Suns (the prequel) because they are so different. Sun of Suns was mainly about their journey to find the key and overpower Falcon Formation whereas Queen of Candesce focuses on Venera and how she survived in Spyre after falling there. In my opinion, this second book is more political and strategical than the first one. There’s a lot of political intrigue whereas the first was more focused on the mission they had and the fights.

So, if you didn’t like Sun of Suns I think you should try to read the second book of the series, Queen of Candesce. It’s quite different from the first one and you might actually like it.

It is the distant future. The world known as Virga is a fullerene balloon three thousand kilometers in diameter, filled with air, water, and aimlessly floating chunks of rock. The humans who live in this vast environment must build their own fusion suns and “towns” that are in the shape of enormous wood and rope wheels that are spun for gravity.
Young, fit, bitter, and friendless, Hayden Griffin is a very dangerous man. He’s come to the city of Rush in the nation of Slipstream with one thing in mind: to take murderous revenge for the deaths of his parents six years ago. His target is Admiral Chaison Fanning, head of the fleet of Slipstream, which conquered Hayden’s nation of Aerie years ago. And the fact that Hayden’s spent his adolescence living with pirates doesn’t bode well for Fanning’s chances…

This book tells the story of Hayden Griffin, a young man seeking revenge. It is set in Virga, an imaginative new world full of action.

The plot was really good and it kept me hooked through the whole book. The characters were interesting and mysterious, their development was great and in the end I just wanted to read the rest of the books in this series.

I recommend this book because it is fast-paced and the plot is intricate. I really loved it and I’ll start reading the sequel, Queen of Candesce, soon.
